What's That and Why Do I Need It?

Lawn care comes with a lot of terminology. Here's a plain-language breakdown of the seasonal services that keep your lawn healthy year after year.

Spring & Fall Cleanup

A spring cleanup clears away the debris, dead leaves, and matted grass that built up over winter — giving your lawn room to breathe and green up properly. A fall cleanup removes fallen leaves and trimmings before the first snowfall, preventing them from smothering the grass and creating conditions for mold and disease. Skipping either one means your lawn starts the next season already behind.

Aerating

Over time, soil compacts from foot traffic, mowing, and rain — squeezing out the air pockets that grass roots need to grow. Aeration uses a machine to pull small plugs of soil out of the ground, loosening the earth so water, oxygen, and nutrients can reach the root zone. Most lawns benefit from aeration twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall. If your lawn feels spongy, drains poorly, or has bare patches that won't fill in, compaction is likely the culprit.

Dethatching

Thatch is the layer of dead grass stems, roots, and organic matter that accumulates between the soil surface and the living grass blades. A thin layer is normal and even helpful, but when it builds up past about half an inch it blocks water and fertilizer from reaching the soil and creates a breeding ground for pests and fungal disease. Dethatching uses a powered or tow-behind rake to pull that layer out, opening up the lawn so it can actually absorb what you put into it.

Overseeding

Overseeding means spreading new grass seed directly over your existing lawn — no tilling required. Grass naturally thins out over the years from heat, drought, heavy use, and disease. Overseeding fills in those thin or bare spots, introduces newer grass varieties that are more drought-tolerant and disease-resistant, and thickens the overall turf so weeds have less room to take hold. It's most effective when done right after aeration, since the seed falls into the holes and makes direct contact with the soil.

Fertilizer

Grass is a living plant that consumes nutrients from the soil every time it grows. Fertilizer replenishes those nutrients — primarily nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for root development, and potassium for overall hardiness. Without it, your lawn gradually depletes the soil and becomes thin, pale, and slow to recover from stress. A proper fertilizer program is timed to the growing season: a spring application to kick-start growth, a summer feed to maintain colour and density, and a fall application to build root reserves before winter.
